Google Testing New Mobile Local FinderMobile local finder is the search and discovery of persons, places, and things within an identifiable space defined by distinct parameters. Mobile local finder is a technology that lets people search for local things using mobile equipment such as mobile phones, PDAs, and other mobile devices. Google mobile local finder is pretty simple to use. Mobile local finder is expected to be significantly higher than for advertising on the general mobile web search.Mobile local finder is usually based on organized directories accessed through specialized search tools, rather than the web, although mobile local search often provides links to mobile (WAP) websites.

The New Google Local Search Display

In early August 2015, Google released a new local search display format that will have a major impact on local businesses. The update was not a change in local search ranking factors, but rather a change in the way local business information is displayed on the search engine results page (SERP).

In the past, Google displayed a variety of organic and local results. Typically, seven local results (the “7-Pack”) were shown, depending on the location and search inquiry. Following this recent update, however, we are now seeing only three local results (the “3-Pack” or “Snack Pack“).

Searchers do have the option to click for more results, but this additional step will likely have a negative impact on local businesses ranked in positions 4–7.

Another significant change is the increase in the number of ads showing above the fold on mobile results. While this doesn’t specifically apply to local mobile results, it’s sure to impact search visibility for local businesses by pushing the 3-pack below the fold. See more here.

GOOGLE TESTING NEW LAYOUT FOR MOBILE LOCAL SEARCH RESULTS

Google has made it pretty obvious that it’s prioritizing mobile user experience this year. Over the weekend, I noticed an update to local results on my phone:The updated layout (pictured on the right) showcases a sleeker design and offers a much more seamless user experience. Note that organic search results are no longer visible without scrolling!

The web results are slightly different too; the results in the new layout echo Pigeon’s preference toward local review sites and directories, while the results from the old layout include a wider variety of sites (including a YouTube snippet and a local newspaper’s review of the haunted attraction). I had to use Chrome’s incognito mode to get the old layout back, so it’s possible that this difference is just related to personalization.

These new info boxes pop up when you click on local results for non-branded queries, too. When you click on a local result for a non-branded query, Google runs a branded search and returns the listing info box as the top result (much like clicking a carousel result on desktop). You can scroll down from there to see organic results for whatever listing you clicked. Check more here.

With the increase of GPS-enabled devices and smartphones, the mobile local finder is absolutely critical to helping customers find your business.
